Monument History

In the spring of 2000, Kane County made a decision to upgrade its existing benchmark locations. The decision was based on the need for accurate and consistent reference points for engineering / construction activities associated with burgeoning county growth. Consequently, The Kane County Division of Transportation in conjunction with Smith Engineering Consultants Inc., installed 51 new 1st order monuments. The monuments were installed and are ready for use in July 2001. The stations are generally located at a 3-mile spacing across the County and provide solid network geometry to facilitate local densification activities. The Kane County Geodetic Monuments were strategically placed to make use of and avoid overlap with recently installed Geodetic Monuments by IDOT (The Illinois Department of Transporation). IDOT Monuments

There are 11 additional 1st Order monuments located throughout Kane County that were installed and are maintained by IDOT. Information regarding these monuments is also available through the NGS web page. The station names for these points are;

First 3 digits = County Abbreviation
4th and 5th digits = State Route #
7th and 8th digits = sequential # along the Route
