PROJECT OVERVIEW
The goal of the Greater Raceway Woods Streambank Stabilization Project was to restore 1900' of Shaw Creek, a stream on Dundee Township's Shaw Property, to a stable stream channel. The methods used to stabilize Shaw Creek included the replacement of a failing outlet structure upstream of the eroded stream channel, and rock sills, riffle construction, and stone toe protection in the eroding stream channel.
This project was made possible through support from the following agencies:
Natural Resources Conservation Service
Illinois Environmental Protection Agency
US Environmental Protection Agency
Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission
Kane-Dupage Soil and Water Conservation District
SHAW PROPERTY
Dundee Township Open Space
The Greater Raceway Woods Streambank Stabilization Project is complete. For post-project photos, see the link to "site photos."
PROBLEM
Over a three-year period, severe erosion began to occur along the stream which flows west to east through the Shaw Property. This erosion progressed rapidly and included sections where the eroded streambanks exposed 5-6 foot vertical drops and threatened adjacent trees and public safety.
SOLUTION
In order to address this stream downcutting and erosion problem, Dundee Township partnered with the Kane County Division of Environmental Management to stabilize the stream channel and replace the outlet structure on the west side of Sleepy Hollow Road. These measures are now in place and have corrected the problems caused by the erosion and will curb any future degradation of the stream channel.
PROJECT PARTNERSHIPS
This project was funded through a grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's 319 Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Grant Program and matching funds from the Dundee Township Open Space Project. The Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Kane-DuPage Soil Water Conservation District have provided extensive technical support in developing and reviewing project plans. The Kane County Division of Environmental Management is managing the project.
