| State's Attorney's Office
The State's Attorney has the exclusive and statutory responsibility of prosecuting violations of the criminal laws of the State of Illinois as well as many other regulatory laws of the state and county including traffic regulations. The State's Attorney is also the lawyer for the county providing legal advice, defense of county court actions, and filing and presentation of cases brought by the county, or against the county. The position of State's Attorney is an elected full time position and the State's Attorney may not have a private practice of law. The professional staff consists of 60 Assistant State's Attorneys, as well as support staff, and technology personnel. Offices are maintained and staffed daily in the Kane County Judicial Center, Juvenile Justice Center, Child Advocacy Center, Government Center, Kane County Courthouse, Internet Task Force, two branch court offices in Elgin and Aurora, and a community prosecution headquarters in Aurora. Professional staff is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to assist law enforcement departments authorizing charges and supervise daily and holiday bond calls. The office represents the People of Kane County in 12 courtrooms daily. Staff assignments are made in the following areas of responsibility: Grand Jury, criminal felony trials, misdemeanor trials, traffic prosecutions, DUI prosecution, welfare fraud, mental health cases, interstate reciprocal child support and public aid cases, advice to government officials, zoning research and planning, environmental prosecutions, civil appeals, tax collection prosecutions, liability and workman's compensation defense, juvenile detention and prosecution, juvenile abuse and neglect, law enforcement liaison, seniors and persons with disabilities, and community prosecution. |
